Sip & Letter Workshop, June 2nd

Few months in the making, my second brush lettering workshop in finally here. When I started I never really thought about teaching because lettering was just my hobby. But as I kept doodling away more and more people reached out with questions. And now, I am glad I can share what I have learned with others.

When I was planning this workshop I wanted to make sure that it is different. I wanted to make it is affordable and inclusive. Lettering and calligraphy is not just for designers and artists, it is for everyone. The best part, it’s one of the most affordable ways to express your creativity (unless you get into collecting pens like me). As a co-founder of Ladies, Wine & Design, Brooklyn, my mission is to empower women as well as men to become better versions of themselves through education and mentorship. And this is how this workshop came to be. To make it truly affordable I not only donated a lot of my time to plan and prepare the workshop but I was also lucky enough to find amazing brands who believed in my mission. I am looking forward to this night when hopefully 15 more people will feel empowered to come out of their comfort zones and learn something new.

Big thanks to our lovely sponsors: Rough Draft | Artist and Craftsman Supply, Brooklyn | Roaring Spring Paper Products | Ramona.

Hand lettering imperfections

Few months ago I had to hand write ideas for a presentation and I realized how rarely I get to do this nowadays. Between using all the laptops, smart phones and touch screens I had become disenchanted with hand writing. After all, a hand written note could never be as perfect as the one I can make on my computer. But I missed that feeling of creating with my hands, of making things imperfect. My own hand writing has become ugly and shaky. I decided I needed to do something about it…

Below is one of my latest hand lettering experiments from my Instagram blog @typeandoodle. It is most definitely not perfect, but it is my own, imperfect and shaky, full of opportunities….

About

Mila, originally from Bulgaria, is a former mathlete who naturally turned artist. After 2 years in a fine arts program, she decided to specialize in design and advertising, and blend art with science together. As an art director, Mila has worked on variety of clients such as Tabasco, Dannon, Kraft, NYU, Kyocera, BDO, OppenheimerFunds, Cigna and most recently Microsoft. She uses technology and user interaction as an inspiration to tell compelling brand stories across print, digital, and social channels.

Beyond the “9 to whenever”, she teaches the world about the meaning of strange Bulgarian proverbs, inversely enjoying learning American idioms like ‘the cats pajamas’, and hoarding pens to sustain her Type&Doodle hand lettering blog. Apart from the daily hustle, she hopes to inspire and empower fellow young designers as a contributor at Ladies, Wine and Design, Brooklyn. Mila is famous for her slight obsession over details and organizing things. She would work for cheese and chocolate. Seriously.
